Mantle Completes Mainnet v2 Tectonic Upgrade

Mantle Network has successfully completed its Mainnet v2 Tectonic upgrade. The upgrade, based on the OP Stack Bedrock, enhances Mantle Network's capacity to offer a cost-effective platform by providing some of the lowest gas fees among Ethereum layer 2 (L2) solutions while also making significant advancements in its interoperability with other EVM chains within the OP Stack ecosystem.

The Mantle v2 Tectonic upgrade followed a successful testnet deployment in January 2024, which included thorough audits by OpenZeppelin, Secure3, and Sigma Prime, along with a public bug bounty program powered by Secure3 that ran from March 4 to March 14.

Since the launch of Mantle Network Mainnet Alpha v1 (Mantle v1) on July 17, 2023, Mantle has come a long way, making significant developments that have enabled us to attract some of the most innovative applications in the DeFi ecosystem. While we acknowledge our progress, it remains crucial for Mantle to maintain this momentum and aim for continuous improvement by implementing key upgrades like Mantle v2 Tectonic.

Exploring the Enhancements in Mantle v2

EIP-1559 Support

Mantle v2 Tectonic now includes support for EIP-1559, a feature not available in the previous version. The integration of EIP-1559 into Mantle v2 Tectonic improves transaction fee price auctions, stabilizes block utilization, and bolsters network security. This upgrade ensures that end users experience more consistent network fees, reduced price volatility, and potential savings over time. For additional information, please visit here.

Removal of Redundant Components

Mantle v2 Tectonic has helped streamline Mantle Network by removing redundant components, including the Data Transport Layer and Threshold Signature Scheme, previously included in Mantle v1. This refinement has been achieved due to the existence of similar functionalities in the OP Stack architecture, allowing us to enhance Mantle Network's efficiency. For further information, please refer to the provided details here.

Predictable Block Time

In the original Mantle v1 design, the generation of L2 blocks was transaction-dependent, with each block holding only a single transaction, leading to unpredictable block times. Mantle v2 Tectonic has transformed this approach. The block generation of L2 is now transaction-independent and follows a fixed schedule, generating blocks every two seconds. This adjustment allows each block to contain multiple transactions, significantly enhancing node performance and ensuring consistent, predictable block times.

Block State Tagging

Due to the modification in block generation methods, Mantle v2 Tectonic now incorporates the same tagging of blocks and block header states as OP Stack-based chains, including unsafe, safe, and finalized.

Migration of Native Tokens in L2

In Mantle v2 Tectonic, a significant update is the migration of native tokens in L2. The flow of MNT tokens in L2 will no longer use the ERC-20 contract, meaning MNT will be a native Mantle Network L2 asset, instead of a bridged version of its Ethereum ERC-20 counterpart. This highly anticipated feature enhances the flow of MNT tokens within L2, providing a more integrated and efficient token ecosystem. For more information on this update, please visit here.

Meta Transaction

To enhance user experience and lower the hurdles for user onboarding, Mantle v2 Tectonic introduces Meta Transactions, designed to facilitate the payment of transaction fees on behalf of the users. This feature leverages a blend of on-chain contracts and off-chain services, enabling users to designate a sponsor and decide the percentage of the transaction fees they will cover, effectively reducing the barriers to user participation.

Fee Optimization Strategy

Mantle v2 Tectonic enhances its fee optimization strategy by utilizing the tokenRatio parameter, which adjusts the impact of using $MNT for transaction fees. In addition, the estimateGas function has been refined to directly offer users an estimate of the total transaction cost.

Depending on your role within Mantle Network, you may be required to take specific actions. For further information on this, please visit the “Mantle Network Mainnet v2 Tectonic Upgrade Guide”.
