Mantle Network's Security Evolution: From Scalability to Progressive Decentralization

Since its inception, Mantle Network has been committed to a dual mission: delivering unprecedented scalability while maintaining an unwavering focus on security through progressive decentralization. Our roadmap has always been designed around the principle that true innovation in blockchain infrastructure requires balancing performance optimization with robust security guarantees — and we continue to execute on this vision with determination and clarity.

Mantle's Scalability Journey with Security at the Core

From the very beginning, Mantle Network's architecture was built with a clear understanding that sustainable scalability cannot come at the expense of security. Our approach has been methodical and forward-thinking, focusing on progressive decentralization as a pathway to both enhanced performance and stronger security guarantees.

From Calldata to Mantle DA: Pioneering Cost Efficiency

Our journey began with a fundamental insight: data availability costs were a critical bottleneck limiting L2 scalability. When Mantle launched in 2023, Ethereum had not yet implemented EIP-4844, and most L2s relied on expensive calldata for data submission. This created a significant barrier to achieving the low-cost, high-throughput environment necessary for mainstream adoption.

Recognizing this challenge, we developed Mantle DA (powered by EigenDA), which dramatically reduced transaction costs while maintaining data integrity. This early adoption of external DA solutions demonstrated our commitment to exploring innovative approaches that could unlock greater scalability without compromising on fundamental security principles.

Strengthening Censorship Resistance with EigenDA

In our continuous effort to strengthen network robustness, Mantle became the first major L2 to fully integrate EigenDA in March 2025. This transition represents a significant leap in censorship resistance, expanding our data availability infrastructure from 10 operators to over 200 operators securing data across the network. These operators are subject to slashing conditions and backed by staked economic security, significantly improving censorship resistance. This move underscores our commitment to reducing trust assumptions and ensuring that Mantle remains resilient against potential centralized control, aligning with our goal of progressive decentralization.

How Mantle Continues to Evolve with a Focus on Security

While this security model has served us well, we recognize that the blockchain ecosystem demands continuous improvement. Our commitment to excellence drives us to push beyond current capabilities toward even stronger security guarantees and enhanced transaction finality. We understand how to provide stronger security guarantees, as proposed by L2BEAT: a functional proof system must be in place with associated Data Availability guarantees (also known as a DA bridge).

Transition to ZK Validity L2s Based on OP-Succinct

Regarding the proof system, in March 2025, Mantle successfully deployed OP Succinct on Mantle Sepolia testnet. This marks the start of Mantle’s transition from a traditional Optimistic Rollup to a ZK Validity Rollup. With OP Succinct, Mantle will gain network security backed by cryptographic guarantees — a substantial improvement over the original architecture. We are particularly excited about the vast acceleration in finality times: withdrawal times can be slashed from the standard seven-day period to less than one hour. This unlocks new asset interoperability and improves liquidity management, helping Mantle become a liquidity hub that services both crypto and fiat use cases across the industry.

We aim to bring the proof system onto the mainnet by Q3/Q4 of this year.

High-Performance DA Iteration with EigenDA v2

For the DA Bridge required for data availability, we believe it is the natural next step to allowing users to verify data publication without relying on the Mantle Sequencer or EigenDA Operator, while also enhancing transparency. Any party, be it auditors or on-chain analytics tools, can replay blocks immediately without depending on external APIs. More importantly, it enhances composability, enabling L1 contracts or third-party L2s to directly use Mantle’s data root for cross-chain MEV, oracles, and other services. This is an improvement that may not be immediately noticeable to users but significantly boosts system robustness.

Mantle has been a long-term partner with EigenDA. Since Mantle’s design in 2023, external DA has been key to improving UX for fees. At the time, Ethereum had not yet implemented EIP-4844, and many L2s used expensive calldata for data submission. By using Mantle DA (powered by EigenDA), we significantly reduced costs. After EIP-4844’s introduction, with the surge in L2s and growing demand for blobs, we remain committed to EigenDA as our DA provider to keep fees sustainable and have transaction data be more scalable. EigenDA v2, now live on the testnet, offers one of the largest data throughput (50mbps+) and fast end-to-end confirmation times (5s on average, 10s at p99). Additionally, EigenDA v2 will bring a comprehensive DA Bridge solution, allowing users to verify EigenDA’s DA commitments through blob headers and related proofs.

Conclusion

Our roadmap reflects a clear vision: Mantle Network will continue to push the boundaries of what's possible in blockchain infrastructure. The combination of OP Succinct's zkVM technology and EigenDA v2's advanced data availability solutions positions us to deliver unprecedented performance while maintaining the highest security standards. We work closely with industry partners like L2BEAT, EigenLayer, and Succinct to ensure that our security improvements align with broader ecosystem standards and best practices.

This collaborative approach ensures that Mantle Network remains a market leader in the modular blockchain space while contributing to the overall advancement of Ethereum's scaling infrastructure. We believe that the strongest networks are built through open collaboration and shared commitment to security excellence.
